The Toronto International Film Festival is one of the most prestigious festivals for filmmakers, no matter what stage of their careers they are in. Every year, the Canadian festival showcases everything from smaller movies directed by upcoming filmmakers to potential blockbusters.
There are some of the best and most creative minds in filmmaking today represented in the 2022 festival, which runs Sept. 8-18. The presentations at TIFF 2022 fall into several different categories.
Among the festival’s biggest categories are the Gala Presentations and Special Presentations, where some of the most anticipated films will premiere. As part of the 2022 Gala lineup, Viola Davis stars in “The Woman King,” directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Tyler Perry stars in “A Jazzman’s Blues.
” The Special Presentations include films like “My Policeman,” featuring Harry Styles and Emma Corrin; “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.”As well as these big-name presentations, TIFF has also included some quirkier offerings under its Discovery, Midnight Madness, and Wavelengths categories.
Wavelengths target niche art-film fans, while Midnight Madness spotlights the particularly bizarre. For example, the Weird Al Yankovic biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe will highlight the Midnight Madness category this year. As for Discovery, it is exactly as it sounds: a showcase for promising directors in the early stages of their careers.
