Variety honored director Olivia Wilde with a cocktail party on Sunday night, one hour before the eagerly anticipated September 5 world premiere of “Don’t Worry Darling” on the Lido. The event was held at the upscale Danieli Hotel in Venice.
The Venice issue of Variety, currently on newsstands, features a cover featuring Wilde, who will premiere her second feature as a director outside of competition at the festival. Variety’s co-editor-in-chief, Ramin Setoodeh, noted that it is the magazine’s first issue devoted to the Venice issue.
Olivia was the only subject we could come up with, according to Setoodeh. Warner Bros., the production company behind “Don’t Worry Darling,” was also complimented by Setoodeh for supporting theatrical releases. Variety is really happy about the return of cinemas and the opportunity for everyone to view “Don’t Worry Darling” in a theater, he said.
Richard Brenner, the president of the production at New Line, and Michael De Luca, the co-chairs of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, were also present at the event. Wilde explained her decision to sell “Don’t Worry Darling” to Warner Bros. in an interview with Variety’s Elizabeth Wagmeister.
“I wanted to work with a firm that would not only let me create the movie on the scale that it deserved, but also let me cast the individuals I wanted, and I wanted theatrical release,” she said. “Warner Bros.
was the only place that gave me written promises of theatrical.” On September 23, the movie “Don’t Worry Darling,” starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles as a married couple in a dystopian future, will be released in theaters.
