A new historical epic portraying the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines has cast Hollywood actor Danny Trejo as Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Variety reports that ‘1521’ is a U.S.-Philippines production produced by Filipino-American filmmaker Francis B. Lara Ho of Inspire Studios.
The film follows Magellan, who led the Spanish expedition and arrived in Asia as the first European. March 16, 1521, was the date when he reached the archipelago that we know as the Philippines today.
The script for ‘1521’ was written by Mary Krell-Oishi. The principal photography is expected to begin in Palawan this month. As part of the cast, Michael Copon will join Trejo. A leader of the island warriors who challenged Magellan’s attempt to colonize the Philippine archipelago, he will portray Datu Lapu-Lapu in the film. It was at the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, when Magellan’s forces were defeated and the Portuguese explorer was killed.
A forbidden romance also complicates the history of Magellan and Copon, involving a Mactan princess Diwata and a Spanish soldier, as well as Magellan’s translator Enrique, played by Filipino actress Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan will be playing Ahmani, the sister of Diwata.
As of 2019, Alonso has been named a Talent to Watch by Variety and International Film Festival & Awards Macao. The actress will star in an upcoming WWII story, entitled ‘Angel Warrior’ as a woman transformed into a fierce underground fighter after experiencing a near-death experience.
