The live-action Blue Beetle movie is on schedule for release and is safe from cancellation. This is the first Latino DC superhero to make it into a live-action film, directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings). As well to Susan Sarandon and Elpidia Carrillo, this film also stars Harvey Guillén, Raoul Max Trujillo, and George Lopez.
It is directed by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). Blue Beetle was originally slated for HBO Max but was delayed to a 2023 theatrical release in late 2021. The film began filming in May 2022 and wrapped filming in mid-July.
It was already in post-production when filming ended in mid-July. The recent shift in strategy under Warner Bros. It was Discovery that shelved Batgirl and Scoob! They canceled a number of DC shows and movies, but Blue Beetle’s future is uncertain. Many feared that the project would suffer the same fate after these cancellations.
The reports Blue Beetle hasn’t been shelved and will release in August 2023 as planned. It appears that some of DC’s other projects in question are also moving forward on the development side, including Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary movie and Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern series.
Although this is good news considering the cancellations that have shaken the industry since last week, there have still been more casualties, including Kevin Smith’s Strange Adventures anthology series, for which one episode had been planned.
There is no doubt that the news of Blue Beetle moving forward is an encouraging development. The Blue Beetle is one of DC’s most iconic characters, making him a strong choice to introduce into the DCEU (if he fits in). In addition to Jaime Reyes, three different people have worn the costume over the years, making him an important Latino superhero.
The confirmation of Blue Beetle also comes as good news to Mariduena, who is set to appear in Cobra Kai season 5 on Netflix in September. Initially, the role of Miguel Diaz brought him to Blue Beetle’s attention, so he will continue playing the role.
Even though it may seem odd that Blue Beetle would continue its theatrical run while Batgirl was shelved, one of the problems with Batgirl was that it was intended to be an HBO Max original. In addition to being an HBO Max original, Blue Beetle was upgraded before production even began to be a theatrical release instead.
This ensured that it would meet the budget and star power demands of a cinema audience. It is disappointing that Batgirl will not be released, but it ultimately rests in the hands of WB Discovery, which appears to still trust Blue Beetle, making those anticipating its release very happy.
