DC League of Super-Pets is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s first DC Extended Universe film. As part of his preparations for his highly anticipated debut as Black Adam, Johnson has voiced Superman’s dog, Krypto, in Warner Bros./DC’s new animated film, DC League of Super-Pets, which is set to be released on July 29.
The film has a star-studded cast, including Johnson, Kevin Hart as Ace, Keanu Reeves as Batman, John Krasinski as Superman, Kate McKinnon as the guinea pig Lulu, and Marc Maron as Lex Luthor, in addition to Johnson. The rest of the members of the League are Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, and Diego Luna.
This DC Comics title, originally published in Adventure Comics in February 1962, inspired directors Jared Stern and Sam Levine’s DC League of Super-Pets. This film follows the adventures of Krypto the Superdog, Ace the Bat-Hound, and their team of super-animals as they fight against Superman, Batman, and the rest of the Justice League to save them. It has been noted that DC League of Super-Pets has a charming, family-friendly storyline, which is facilitated by its animated nature,
The response to its story has been quite positive as a whole. The DC League of Super-Pets star recently thanked all the families who attended the show this weekend on his social media pages. A- is one of the few A- ratings As The Rock claims to have received throughout his life, according to CinemaScore. ‘THANK YOU to all the families for loving our #SuperPets,’ he wrote.
The movie debuted with $23 million at the box office, beating Jordan Peele’s Nope and Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder with an A- CinemaScore. However, it didn’t perform as well as Pixar’s Lightyear at the box office. Krypto and his band of heroic pets certainly had a good time this weekend, which bodes well for the future of the DC League of Super-Pets.
Rotten Tomatoes currently scores the film 72% with critics and 89% with audiences. A broader audience may be attracted to the DC League of Super-Pets through word-of-mouth. Only DC’s own The Batman earned a higher CinemaScore among superhero movies in 2022. It’s an impressive accomplishment.
The DC League of Super-Pets is aimed at a younger audience, while Johnson’s next DC film, Black Adam, is said to showcase the brutality of its title character. Even after playing Superman’s dog, Johnson has repeatedly expressed his desire to see his DC anti-hero take on Cavill’s Superman.
Johnson is working on both ends of the superhero spectrum with DC League of Super-Pets and Black Adam, and it’ll be interesting to see which film is a bigger hit with audiences. A- and rocky box office numbers for DC League of Super-Pets suggest he’s off to a good start.
