Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist had an incredibly loyal fan base and received positive reviews from critics, but NBC canceled the show after only two seasons. An Emmy nomination was earned for Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas, the Roku Channel’s holiday movie that concluded the season’s cliffhangers.
There is a natural curiosity about whether there will be more holiday movies or specials in the future. Austin Winsberg, the creator of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, explained what the Emmy nomination means and what the future holds for the franchise in a Variety interview.
Although nothing has been confirmed, Winsberg said he has “a million stories left to tell” in Zoey’s universe, and he would absolutely continue the trend of holiday movies as long as a network or service would pay for them.
“A bunch of spooky songs could be used for Zoey’s Extraordinary Halloween, and there are plenty of love songs we could sing for Zoey’s Extraordinary Valentine’s Day,” he said. “Anyone who wants to make a film about Arbor Day can count on me for songs about trees and nature!”
According to Winsberg, bringing Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas to Roku will allow fans to finally close the book on Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas season 2. “Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, but we had many more stories to tell. Being able to give the fans closure and live with these characters one more time meant everything to me,” Winsberg said.
“The assignment was certainly challenging,” he said. “Our goal was to make the movie accessible to audiences that may not have seen the original show, while at the same time addressing a number of loose threads in a structure that felt authentic for a movie and not just two episodes of the show.”
