As part of the launch of the BFI’s new Filmmaker Awards: Celebrating Creative Audacity, Chanel is partnering with the BFI and Tilda Swinton will serve as jury chair. BFI will award three cash prizes of $ 24,211 each to emerging UK film creators who are innovative, risk-taking, and creative.
Swinton will unveil the winners on September 29 at Luminous, the BFI’s fundraising gala that benefits education. The jury also includes British Vogue’s Edward Enninful, the founder and director of Le Cinema Club Marie-Louise Khondji, and the CEO of the BFI, Ben Roberts. An industry panel will nominate filmmakers in the run-up to the event, and then they will be able to apply.
Filmmakers, writers, directors, and writers/directors must be UK residents and have produced one or two features or works in XR and immersive media which have been released or screened in the UK. By reviewing a shortlist of seven creatives, with an emphasis on underrepresented voices, the jury will determine whether they are worthy of the award.
There will be a prize for a female or nonbinary filmmaker in at least one of the awards. To be eligible for funding, all projects must meet the BFI Diversity Standards. Both the BFI and Chanel, Swinton said, are acknowledged beacons committed to both the vibrancy of the new and the diligent and dedicated care of our valuable cultural archives.
Together, they form a powerful and effective alliance. In my daily practice, I have the good fortune of working closely with both of these families: the chance to share that good fortune with more and more artists is really exciting.
By giving out these Filmmaker Awards, this fellowship will grow significantly, and by raising funds at the Luminous Gala, this essential public service will be sustained. The opportunity to serve this awesome combo initiative in any way possible is a great honor for me.”
