Karaoke, Moshe Rosenthal’s 2022 Jerusalem Film Festival audience winner, has been acquired by Greenwich Entertainment for distribution in North America. Upon moving into their penthouse apartment in their tower block, an attractive talent agency owner injects much-needed excitement into the lives of an upper-middle-class couple on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
The couple receives coveted party invitations and tries to get the attention of the newcomer while acting out long-dormant ambitions and identities. A team of Israeli actors stars in the film, led by Lior Ashkenazi Sasson Gabay and Rita Shukrun. Rosenthal wrote the screenplay for his first feature film.
A karaoke event was organized by the Tel Aviv University Gaudeamus Productions and Liminal Content by Ben Giladi. As well to premiering at Tribeca Festival, the film played Jerusalem Film Festival, where it was awarded the best first feature jury prize.
Film funding was provided by the Israeli Film Fund, the Steve Tisch Fund of Tel Aviv University, the NFCT, and the Weil-Bloch Film Award, along with the Israel Lottery Council for the Culture & Arts. According to Greenwich, the release date will be in the first quarter of 2023.
Filmmakers Edward Arentz and Oded Horowitz negotiated the deal with Carole Baraton of international sales agent Charades and WME Independent. Rosenthal worked in TV before Karaoke. The US remake rights to Confess, his millennial dating web series, have been acquired by AMC Networks.
