Leslie Grace releases an official statement regarding the cancellation of the Batgirl movie, in which she would have played Barbara Gordon. It was no secret that Warner Bros.’ upcoming DC movie Batgirl was one of the most anticipated.
Directed by Ms. Marvel’s Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Batgirl will tell the story of Barbara’s journey to becoming the titular Gotham City vigilante. After appearing in The Flash, Michael Keaton was slated to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman.
The film is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in 2022, after principal photography ended on March 31. Warner Bros. shocked Hollywood with an unexpected move. In a controversial decision, Discovery canceled the Batgirl movie.
HBO Max will not release Batgirl, and the studio doesn’t plan to release it in theaters either. Fans and industry figures alike have weighed in on Warner Bros.’s surprise call in the past 24 hours. DCEU film axed by Discovery.
As social media reacts to the cancellation of the Batgirl movie and the directors respond, Grace herself has now broken her silence. In addition to praising her co-stars and the entire creative team, Grace thanked her fans for their support.
“I feel blessed to have worked with absolute greats and formed relationships for a lifetime.” she wrote. Here are some behind-the-scenes photos and videos of the actress on the Batgirl set.
After Warner Bros. canceled the Batgirl movie, many reports emerged regarding the company’s state. There is more to come from Discovery as they plan to shake things up even further.
Despite the fact that many things are yet to be confirmed, the DC brand has received the most attention over the last few days. A sequel to Aquaman 2 and Shazam 2 has been pushed back once again, while the Supergirl spinoff film following The Flash has been scrapped.
Warner Brothers are holding its quarterly earnings this week; more information about Batgirl’s cancellation may be revealed after the studio’s official statement. Batgirl’s first feature film lead role would have been extremely unfortunate for many reasons.
Grace’s Batgirl would also have been a big step for representation since her portrayal would be the first time Barbara has been portrayed by a Latina in a superhero film.
In spite of Grace’s enthusiasm throughout the entire process, knowing she won’t get to share her version of the character with the world hurts the most. Despite the reaction fans have had to Batgirl’s cancellation, only time will tell whether the film ever makes it to theaters, or if a miracle occurs.
