Shia LaBeouf developed the screenplay
According to the 36-year-old actor who developed the screenplay for “Honey Boy” while he was undergoing therapy in the past, the movie is essentially a “woe is me” account of his life. This narrative of a deeply wounded kid that the audience can relate to.

“My dad never hit me, never. He spanked me once, one time. And the story that gets painted in ‘Honey Boy is, this dude is abusing his kid all the time,” he admitted. “But that wasn’t my narrative, because it didn’t position me as this wounded, fractured child that you could root for, which is what I was using him for”
He also recently revealed that he had converted entirely to Catholicism and asserted that he accepted responsibility for his part in creating the narrative while also realizing that the picture he painted would likely accompany his father for the rest of his life.
