Are you interested in playing a game with Viola Davis? Lionsgate certainly hopes so since The Woman King and The Suicide Squad actor is joining the prequel’s cast. Viola Davis will star as Head Gamemaker Dr. Volumnia Gaul in The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lionsgate announced today.
On November 17, 2023, The Hunger Games prequel will be released in theaters. A young Coriolanus Snow is the protagonist of the story before he becomes the authoritarian president of Panem. A once-proud family has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol, and 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is its last hope.
Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12, just as the 10th annual Hunger Games are fast approaching. Despite this, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds to their advantage after Lucy Gray holds Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony.
With their newfound political savvy and instincts for showmanship, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and who is a snake. Dun dun dun! According to Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane.
“The Hunger Games films have always been elevated by their exceptional casting, and we are thrilled to be continuing that tradition with Viola Davis as Volumnia Gaul.”Adding layers of complexity and menace to this story will be her formidable and powerful presence.
“The director of the Hunger Games prequel, Francis Lawrence, added, “Dr. Gaul is cruel and creative as well as fearsome and formidable. As the game’s most commanding figure, Snow’s savvy as a political operator is deeply influenced by her.
“Viola has always been our dream for Dr. Gaul because of the fine layered intelligence and emotion she brings to every role, said producer Nina Jacobson. Coriolanus Snow is transformed into the man he will become through Gaul’s brilliant and eccentric strategy. With Viola’s extraordinary range and presence, we are incredibly fortunate to have her play this pivotal role.
“Now they’re adding Davis to the cast of The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes? That’s hot! The idea of her playing a menacing role other than Amanda Waller, who she played in Suicide Squad, excites me and I know she will excel at it.
It took me a while to warm up to this prequel to the Hunger Games, but now I’m intrigued by it. What about you? Is The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes something you’re looking forward to? Is Davis’ addition to the mix going to change anything for you?
