On TikTok, Tyra Banks gets dragged over ANTM’s handling of a plus-sized contestant

It’s been four years since America’s Next Top Model came back from the dead after 22 seasons. Now that there are no more cycles left to see, former fans can reflect on scandalous moments from the show that would never be allowed today.

The TikTok compilation video of how former host Tyra Banks and the judges handled a contestant who was considered “plus-sized” on America’s Next Top Model is a trending piece of controversy on social media.

There’s a compilation TikTok video making the rounds tagged #tyrabanks which starts with the caption “Most appalling behavior on ANTM…the mistreatment of the first ‘plus-sized’ model.” When Robin was 26 years old, Tyra Banks considered her a plus-sized model.

Robin, Banks said, was “not plus-sized on top, and on the bottom, she is.”Janice Dickerson, judge, and ex-model said Robin was “out as a supermodel” and the next top model won’t be plus-sized. Instead of slamming Dickerson and the other judges for their offensive comments, Robin said she wished Robin’s upper body and lower body matched “better.

“In the video, Banks criticizes Robin’s wardrobe choice as she wears a sarong over her bottom bikini. Asked if Robin covered herself all the time so no one would stare at her hips, Banks replied that she did. Former America’s Got Talent host continued to ask Robin if she was crying after Robin walked away in tears.

According to some judges, Robin is “too old” to start modeling and France has no market for plus-size models. Robin’s body shape turned the judges off, but they weren’t pleased when she didn’t provide them with a nude photo even though she explained she wasn’t comfortable in that position. Robin was eventually asked to leave.

Many comments on this TikTok video expressed sympathy for Robin and hatred for the former Victoria’s Secret model. The comments would say that they were shocked that the judges considered this season one contestant plus-sized and treated her so badly.

Users on TikTok also felt that Tyra Banks should have defended Robin since she’s been in Robin’s shoes before when she started as a model. A couple of years ago, Tyra Banks admitted America’s Next Top Model made mistakes, in that by ensuring these girls would get work, she would tell them what they needed to change about their appearance.

Now, if anything needed to be “fixed” with any of the girls, the feedback should have been given after the contestant had won. Perhaps this television personality would have treated Robin differently if this show had been done today, or maybe he would have stopped fat-shaming contestants.

Currently, Tyra Banks serves as the new host of Dancing with the Stars. If America’s Next Top Model were to return for more cycles, it’s likely the show would be more inclusive of people of all sizes and shapes.
