Omar Sy will reimagine / remake director John Woo’s action-thriller, The Killer, following the success of the Netflix series Lupin. According to Deadline, Universal has confirmed Sy will play the role, which is scheduled to be released exclusively on Peacock in 2023. As well as producing the film, Woo will direct the film alongside Lori Tilkin.
The new version is not likely to include any new content, with Peacock only confirming it in a sentence earlier this summer, writing: “Celebrated action auteur John Woo returns to reimagine and direct his classic.
“Assassin Chow Yun-fat takes on a mission to pay for a singer’s recovery and surgery, all while he is pursued by a cop obsessed with his tactics, in Woo’s 1985 original version of the film. Also starring in the Hong Kong action flick were Danny Lee, Sally Yeh, and Kenneth Tsang.
Several versions of the script have been floating around for a few years, but a new version of The Killer appears to combine them all. It was revealed in Deadline’s report that the reimagining’s screenplay was written by 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell, Welcome to the Punch’s Eran Creevy, and 42 writer Brian Helgeland.
The screenplay for the original film was written by Woo. Announcing the impending release of The Killer, Universal also announced two other films. One of them is Shooting Stars, a movie that tells the origin story of LeBron James, from his time in high school to his journey to the NBA.
SpringHill Company, James and Maverick Carter’s production company, worked with Universal on the project. There is also Praise This, a movie starring Chloe Bailey as a member of a community choir who pushes her members musically and whose involvement with a hip-hop star may launch or jeopardize her career. The three movies are scheduled to be released in 2023.
Our goal is to continually improve Peacock to serve fans, said Kelly Campbell, NBCUniversal’s President of Peacock and Direct-to-Consumer and International. We are excited to offer fresh, exclusive, original films to our customers next year alongside the legendary Universal Pictures blockbuster films and beloved franchises that are streaming now on our service.”
