A shocking revelation by Nicole Byer

“If we’re being honest,” hosted by Laverne Cox, interviews some famous comedians, including Nicole Byer. During the Interview, Cox asked Byer a couple of questions. She confirmed a story about Byer, which Cox had heard earlier, and if it was true. Cox asked, “Did a casting director ask you to talk more Black?”

Byer confirmed it was true, and not just that much more had happened. She said the Director asked her, “Can you be Blacker?” Byer was playing a fairy, and the Director asked her to get blacker for the part she was playing. The Director told her that if she is too dark, she’ll dust it off, and she can play a part in her natural color.

Racism at peaks

Cox asked Byer what race the Casting Director belonged to, and she replied, “Oh, you know she was white like the snow.” Byer was a fresher at that point and thought it was important for her career, so she did what the Director asked her to do.

She didn’t like it, didn’t enjoy it, but she had to do it. Cox asked if Byer overdid it and was asked to come out as natural. However, she wished she could embarrass the Director by overdoing it and embarrassing the Casting Director.
