According to Deadline, Netflix has acquired Thomas Wright’s new crime thriller The Stranger, starring Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris (via Deadline). A true story is the basis for The Stranger, which follows two strangers who form an uneasy friendship during a long journey together.
The first is a missing persons suspect, while the second is an undercover detective trying to track him down. In describing the film, Wright said: “With The Stranger, I wanted to make a psychological crime film that would transport audiences into a hidden world, one that would be both authentic and realistic in detail, as well as immersive and cinematic.”
“The film demanded attention and investment. The film was one that the audience could lean into.” Despite the fact that violence is the subject of the film, it isn’t its subject. I chose to focus the film on people who didn’t know the victim, yet spent years devoted to them, regardless of their mental or physical limitations.
“The film deals with the connections between people. That means, for me, it’s a film about empathy.” The film will premiere globally on Netflix this October following a limited theatrical release, and it was featured at Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year. Director Michael Haneke called Cannes’ inclusion of his film “unprecedented.”
“The debuting of an independent Australian film in Cannes’ Official Selection, and its distribution on Netflix to the world’s largest audience, is unprecedented,” he said.
He will next be seen in the survival film Thirteen Lives, a film about the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in which a Thai junior soccer team spent 18 days trapped in a cave. His most recent film was the Princess Diana biopic Spencer and The Green Knight, which he starred in alongside Edgerton.
