Back at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel formally announced that a Thunderbolts movie was in the works. However, the Thunderbolts squad has been around for a long time, and during that time, they have gone through a tonne of various lineups and iterations.
Super-villains in disguise make up the entirety of some versions. Others have had heroes like Luke Cage or Hawkeye commanding teams of ex-bad guys. The Thunderbolts alternate between serving the government and acting as vigilantes. Marvel Studios had several options for how to approach the idea.
More information was shared regarding their strategy, including the team’s composition, during D23. The MCU’s Thunderbolts will be Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Black Widow (Florence Pugh), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
It’s an intriguing cast, some of which have been in Thunderbolts comics and others who have served as teasers for the team in various Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Many of the characters are also related; for example, Taskmaster was one of the individuals Black Widow, and Red Guardian faced off against in the Black Widow movie, which should be… interesting. Black Widow and Red Guardian are also sorts of father and daughter.
Zemo, played by Daniel Bruhl, who previously appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, is the most shocking name missing from the cast. Zemo was the first character in Marvel Comics to put together a Thunderbolts squad, and over the years, he has frequently either sided with or opposed the band. He looked a lock for this film, given his portrayal in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but he’s not a member of the MCU T-Bolts unless they keep his involvement a surprise in a later announcement.
