Kung Fu Panda 4: Everything We Know

The Kung Fu Panda franchise hasn’t had a new film since 2016, but here’s everything you need to know about Kung Fu Panda 4. After Kung Fu Panda 3’s release in 2016, there has been talking about Kung Fu Panda 4, but now a release date has been announced – here’s everything we know about DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 4.

Since the release of Kung Fu Panda 3, the franchise has expanded through two TV series, but a new film has not yet been announced. Kung Fu Panda 4 now has a release date, marking Universal’s first feature film distribution of the prolific franchise since it acquired DreamWorks in 2016.

Some details remain hazy, but the movie will be distributed by Universal. Since his introduction in 2008’s Kung Fu Panda, Po has grown up a lot. The many feature films, shorts, and TV shows in the DreamWorks franchise have long explained how Po came to earn his title. even though he was unexpectedly named the Dragon Warrior at the beginning of the movie.

It cemented Po’s role as the Dragon Warrior and one of the Kung Fu Masters of the Jade Palace, allowing him to develop his abilities as a teacher and protector of the Valley of Peace. With its holiday specials and TV shows, the Kung Fu Panda franchise emphasized Po’s adventures with the Kung Fu Masters, sometimes turning the spotlight entirely on them. 

While the Kung Fu Panda TV shows and shorts were especially invaluable for the worldbuilding they provided, the feature films tended to focus on the enhancement of Po’s abilities and his own story, making a new Kung Fu Panda movie particularly interesting when considering Po’s path.

The latest on Kung Fu Panda 4 can be found here. Although the Kung Fu Panda franchise has expanded through television shows, not much was known about a fourth installment, despite the feature films earning more than $1.8 billion worldwide.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is currently in development by DreamWorks Animation, which changed everything. In addition, Universal announced the exact release date for Kung Fu Panda 4: March 8, 2024. It’s unclear when Kung Fu Panda 4 will be released, but Jack Black is likely to return as Po, as he has in all of the Kung Fu Panda feature films as well as most franchise shorts, the 2010 holiday special, and Netflix’s Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, released in 2022. 

Tigress, Crane  Viper  Monkey, and Mantis of the Furious Five will also likely return, as they played a similar role to Po in Kung Fu Panda 1 to 3. Lastly, Kung Fu Panda 4 wouldn’t be complete without Master Shifu and Po’s father, Mr. Ping.

Li Shan, Po’s biological father, may also appear, although it’s unclear whether he will be voiced by Fred Tatasciore or Bryan Cranston at this point. Currently, no details are known about the plot of Kung Fu Panda 4. Still, Kung Fu Panda 2 focused on Po’s history and how it deeply affected him in a way that didn’t let him find his inner peace.

and Kung Fu Panda 3 let Po master the knowledge and use of chi, making Po’s progress as an individual and as a Kung Fu Master central in both instances. As Po’s path as a Kung Fu Master and as a Dragon Warrior is likely to be further advanced in Kung Fu Panda 4, it will make the fourth installment especially interesting, as the TV shows did not advance Po’s story much.
