The sympathy and support deeply touch King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla from Britain and around the globe.
On September 18, the new king, on his royal family's official Instagram, mentioned how he and his Queen had been deeply touched for the past ten days by receiving support and messages of condolence from the country and worldwide.
He also said he was moved beyond everything, especially in London, Edinburgh, Hillsborough, and Cardiff, as people took the trouble to come and pay their last-ever service to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The week after his mother's passing, the king and Camilla, 75, embarked on a tour of the U.K. after ascending to the throne, stopping in each of the four nations. Official visits were made to Wales and Northern Ireland in addition to attending ceremonies in Scotland, where Elizabeth passed away on September 8 at the age of 96, and England, where she will be buried on September 19. In his Instagram post, the new monarch concluded that
“As we all prepare to say our last farewell, I wanted simply to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those countless people who have been such a support and comfort to my Family and myself in this time of grief.”
A moment of silence was observed nationwide at 8 p.m. BST on Sunday. According to the BBC, people gathered in Belfast, Blackpool, and other towns throughout the U.K. to pay their respects as Prime Minister Liz Truss stood outside 10 Downing Street with her head lowered.
Queen Elizabeth's coffin is at Westminster Hall in London, and the public has been lined up to pay homage and last service of respect to the late Queen. His son Prince William also paid a visit to the mourners on Saturday, September 17.
The coffin will be transferred to Westminster Abbey for a state funeral service which is said to be attended by hundreds of world leaders, including President of the U.S. Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden. Following the service, a procession will carry the monarch's remains through London and outside to Windsor Castle, where she will rest next to her late husband, Prince Philip, in a mausoleum.
During his meeting with the Ascension Council on Saturday, September 10, Charles made one of his first pronouncements as the new king. He approved “appointing the day of Her Late Majesty's state burial as a bank holiday in the United Kingdom.”
