‘Joker 2’ gets an official release date

Joker: Folie à Deux, the upcoming sequel to the massively successful and award-winning Joker movie directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, has been slated for release on May 19, amidst a flurry of publicity surrounding the cancellation of its previously upcoming Batgirl movie.

Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and Phillips returning as director and writer are the only details we currently know about the film. According to recent reports, Lady Gaga was in negotiations to join the cast of the film as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s on-again, off-again girlfriend.

As reported by the same sources, Joker 2 may be musical. Taking into account that the film’s subtitle refers to an identical or similar mental disorder that affects two or more people, usually members of the same family, if the Joker is involved, Harley Quinn is the only character canonically sharing the same mental disorder.

Additionally, some have rumored Willem Dafoe could appear in the sequel, perhaps as a Joker copycat. The first film, an alternate origin story for the most famous villain in Batman history, made billions of dollars worldwide and won Academy Awards for both Phoenix and Hildur Guðnadóttir.
