Prince William has described the poise he had in his younger days and his approach to dating.
The Couple: Prince William & Kate
Dating as a Prince and heir to the throne comes with very specific challenges, and the Duke of Cambridge has revealed the difficulties he found when he saw a woman he liked. Prince William has been married to Kate Middleton for 11 years following their wedding at Westminster Abbey in 2011.
The Relationship Of The Couple
However, their relationship, which blossomed at the University of St Andrews, was not always plain sailing. In June 2003, William celebrated his 21st birthday and opened up about the pressures he felt when dating women. The future King said: “If I fancy a girl and I really like her, and she fancies me back, which is rare, I ask her out.” He continued: “But, at the same time, I don’t want to put them in an awkward situation because a lot of people don’t quite understand what comes with knowing me.”
Duke & Duchess’s Relationship
The Duke and Duchess’s decade-long relationship proves that Kate was more than prepared to face what adjusting to royal life would throw at her. William spoke to ITV’s Tom Bradbury following his engagement to Kate and said: “When I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her. “I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there.” The pair met in 2001 as they both studied at the university in Scotland and lived just doors away at the St Salvator’s Hall of residence.
The First Meeting
Despite William missing the initial beginning of university, including the all-important Fresher’s Week, it took a while for the couple to bond. Kate told Mr. Bradbury about their first meeting: “I actually think I went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy about meeting you.” She added: “It did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other but we did become very close friends from quite early.”
Kate Caught William’s Eye
During the second half of their first year at university, Kate truly caught William’s eye when she starred in the infamous charity fashion show. The future Duchess was seen walking down a catwalk in a sheer dress which showed off her lingerie underneath, and William, who was in the front row, allegedly told his friend Fergus Boyd: “Wow, Fergus, Kate’s hot!”. In autumn 2022, the pair grew ever closer when they moved into a shared house with their friends off campus. William recalled that from the point of moving into the house, their relationship “just sort of blossomed from there, really.” He continued: “We just saw more of each other and, you know, hung out a bit more.”

Hit A Rough Patch
Once the pair left university and embarked on their careers, they hit a rough patch following intense scrutiny by the tabloids who took aim at Kate and her family. In the spring of 2007, the pair split in what Kate said “made her a stronger person,” though she “wasn’t very happy about it.” However, by August of that year, the pair were back together again as they went on holiday together to Seychelles. Now the pair are still going strong with their three children and they move to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor to embark on a new chapter of their lives.
