With The Rings of Power, Amazon brings Lord of the Rings to small screens almost five years after its official announcement. The series was initially unknown to what extent (if at all) familiar faces would appear and whether it would take place in the same universe as Peter Jackson’s films.
In light of Jackson’s absence from the film and some familiar characters being played by new actors, Maxim Baldry – who plays Isildur – has discussed trying to make the character relatable despite his failure to destroy the One Ring.
Despite not having an active role in either the Lord of the Rings novels or film adaptations, Isildur is best remembered for not destroying the One Ring when he had the chance, which led to the events of the trilogy and the heartache of many characters. An actor may not have the greatest legacy, but it’s still a juicy role.
During San Diego Comic-Con, Maxim Baldry told CinemaBlend what it has been like to discover a new side of Isildur: During the Peter Jackson films, Isildur only appeared briefly, and the bulk of his screen time was dedicated to showing how badly he failed and guaranteeing the rise of Sauron.
For The Rings of Power, that won’t be the case, and the Amazon series could just make Isildur relatable and make his actions clearer. The latest big trailer indicates there is plenty of stories to tell before he destroys the One Ring, even though he may not be able to do so in the end.
Among the character names, that readers, and/or viewers of the J.R.R. Tolkien films will recognize is Isildur. In the series, Elrond will be portrayed by Robert Aramayo and Galadriel will be portrayed by Morfydd Clark. They are both heavily featured in the latest trailer as well as the teaser trailer that preceded it.
Khazad-dúm will look much better than it does by the time of The Fellowship of the Ring (although a Balrog will appear), and Rivendell is also a setting. During early footage, Maxim Baldry’s Isildur can be seen aboard a ship, so he’ll likely spend some time at sea. It’s too early to predict just how much attention Isildur will receive in The Rings of Power.
Since Amazon already renewed its Lord of the Rings TV show several years ago, at least two seasons are assured, and even as the show goes in its own directions, there is still plenty to explore in Tolkien lore. In addition, the wait is nearly over, which is fantastic news for those who have been waiting for the first episode for almost half a decade.
As part of the 2022 TV premiere schedule, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Amazon(opens in new tab) on Friday, September 2 for those who subscribe to Amazon Prime. The full season will not stream immediately on September 2 but rather will be released weekly, giving viewers two months to enjoy Middle-earth action.
