In Netflix’s Wednesday Show, the creators explain what sets Tim Burton’s Addams Family apart from other series

There have been two animated adaptations of The Addams Family in recent years, but this fall we will see another live-action version of this creepy, kooky, and altogether kooky family. In June, we saw Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams in the Netflix show Wednesday, and now we see the central character with other members of her family.

Wednesday co-creator Alfred Gough described how this Tim Burton-directed streaming series differs from previous live-action adaptations. It was announced a year ago that Luis Guzmán would play Gomez Addams on Wednesday, and a few days later, Catherine Zeta-Jones was cast as Morticia Addams.

According to Vanity Fair, Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday with her brother and parents will also feature Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams: For the first time since the 1990s, The Addams Family has been portrayed live-action, with the theatrically released movies The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, as well as the television series The New Addams Family and the direct-to-video movie Addams Family Reunion.

This picture gives off the right vibe you’d expect from these characters, but it’s strange not to see Uncle Fester, Grandmama, and Lurch. Whether the former two will appear on Wednesday is unknown, but George Burcea will play Lurch.

Whatever the case, with Tim Burton’s gothic filmmaking career, it’s about time that he’s paired with The Addams Family for his first TV outing! The first Addams Family movie was pitched to Burton in the early 1990s, but he turned it down.

Burton was also set to co-write and co-produce a stop-motion Addams Family movie in the early 2010s, but it was canceled. Wednesday was designed to stand out from previous live-action Addams Family projects by harkening back to Charles Addams’ original cartoons with Gomez’s look.

According to Alfred Gough: As well as Raul Julia, John Astin, Tim Curry, and Glenn Taranto have played Gomez Addams in live-action movies, while Oscar Isaac voiced him in animated movies released in 2019 and 2021.

Miles Millar, who collaborated with Burton on Wednesday, had the following to say about this version of the character, along with what Tim Burton wanted to achieve: Don’t expect Wednesday to be another Addams Family story.

The title character attends Nevermore Academy, a prestigious boarding school for outcasts. In the town where the institution is based, a series of murders is plaguing Wednesday. On Wednesday, Morticia, Gomez, and Pugsly will all be prominent, but Wednesday Addams needs to be made abundantly clear to Netflix subscribers.

Tim Burton was also drawn to Wednesday’s character because he could explore it without having to wrap things up in an hour and 45 minutes, and Miles Millar stated that the show was supposed to be an eight-hour Tim Burton film. In the meantime, check out our Netflix TV schedule for 2022 to learn what other shows the platform will be delivering for the remainder of the year as we wait for Wednesday to premiere on Netflix.
