Actor Danny Trejo will play Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in ‘1521’, an upcoming historical epic depicting the Battle of Mactan during the pre-colonial era of the Philippines.
The film follows the journey of Magellan, who led the Spanish expedition and was one of the first Europeans to reach Asia, produced by Filipino-American filmmaker Francis B. Lara Ho of Inspire Studios. The archipelago we know as the Philippines today was reached by him on March 16, 1521. The script for ‘1521’ was written by Mary Krell-Oishi.
During this month, principal photography is scheduled to begin in Palawan. Trejo is joined in the cast by Michael Copon. As Datu Lapu-Lapu, he will portray the island ruler who repelled Magellan’s attempt to colonize the Philippine archipelago. In the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, Magellan’s forces were defeated and he was killed.
Magellan’s encounter with Copon is complicated by the forbidden romance of Mactan princess Diwata, played by local actress Bea Alonzo, with a Spanish soldier, and Enrique, Magellan’s translator played by Filipino actor Hector David Jr. Ahmani, Diwata’s sister, is played by Filipino actress Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan.
Variety and the International Film Festival & Awards Macao previously recognized Alonso as a Talent to Watch. She will also appear in the WWII story ‘Angel Warrior’ as a woman whose near-death experience transforms her into a fierce underground fighter.
