It’s hard to find someone who understands adolescent angst quite like Tegan and Sara. As of Aug. 12, Amazon Freevee has released a teaser for High School, based on the memoir of the same name by the beloved indie pop duo.
A trailer for the movie traces the upbringing of identical twins Railey and Seazynn Gilliland, played by TikTok creators Railey and Seazynn Gilliland. Simone (Cobie Smulders), the twins’ mother, explains that everything has been shared between the two of them. “You might be able to make some new friends here.”
Despite exploring their own interests and possible romantic partners, the girls are brought together by music. They collaborated on the song “Tegan Didn’t Go to School Today.” A demo version of the song appeared on their audiobook.
“It’s a story about discovering your own identity, made even more complicated because your twin’s struggle and self-discovery mirror your own,” she said. “With a backdrop of grunge and rave culture from the 1990s, the series weaves between parallel and discordant memories of twin sisters living down the hall from one another.”
In addition to Kyle Bornheimer, Esther McGregor, Olivia Rouyre, and Nate Corddry, the series also stars Kyle Bornheimer. Both Railey and Seazynn, who are twins themselves, make their acting debut as part of High School with Tegan and Sara’s proactive efforts.
When Tegan saw Railey and Seazynn for the first time on TikTok, she felt as if it was kismet. They were so sweet and original that I couldn’t help but watch them. I texted Sara the video. It was too bad they didn’t act, I texted her. Sara was undeterred. They were performers, musical and dynamic. Sara said, “You can’t teach charisma.”
Sara was relentless—these were the twins who had to play us.” A world premiere will take place at the Toronto International Film Festival this September, and the first four episodes will be available on Amazon FreeVee starting on October 14.
