Filmmaker Oliver Trevena comments on Bruce Willis’ humbleness, kindness, and brilliant performance

Bruce Willis will leave behind a legacy of kindness in Hollywood. He tells PEOPLE folk how it was to work with the “humble, lovely, brilliant” actor on one of his final films after he announced his retirement from the industry in March. 

The idea of meeting Bruce Willis on my bucket list is on my wish list. He’s a legend. Many people grew up watching Die Hard, and I’m sure most of them did as well,” Trevena, 41, says. “There is nothing like being in a movie with an icon in the action and movie industry.” Golden Globe winner Oliver Trevena reflects on working with the actor in one of his final films after he announced his retirement from the industry in March.

Willis’s health-conscious

Immediately after Willis revealed he had been diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder that impacted his cognitive abilities, Hollywood rallied around him. A family announcement announced the actor would “step away from the career that meant so much to him” to focus on his health after four decades of adored roles in movies and television.

Trevena describes the guy as ” humble, lovely, brilliant.” It’s inspiring to see people who have been in and around Hollywood for so long and have achieved so much but still treat everyone with humility and respect. I’ve been around Hollywood for a long time, and I’m always inspired by people who have been in it for a long time and accomplished so much.”

Trevena’s interest in the shot

Trevena says he will learn a lot from Bruce, especially about respect. But more just about human relationships, he adds. A federal agent watching and assisting Eddie Flynn (Trevena) via government surveillance from a room 50 miles away, Trevena plays gun smuggler Eddie Flynn. Armed intruders attack the latter at his home. When Justin’s supervisor Shane Mueller gets into trouble, Willis must intervene.

Trevena was presented with a welcome challenge as the production is being shot during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the end, Trevena says, it was quite a fun adventure. “I thought it might be fun if I acted like it was all happening without anyone in front of me,” she says. The two still got to bond since Trevena arrived early to meet Willis, praise Brandon Stiefer for writing a “very clever” script, and work on their lines together.

To ensure that they could see and I could see how the scene would be played, he said he arrived four or five days early on set to read his lines off-camera. In addition, it’s all about their energy, and if they’re giving it in the lines, I’ll know how to do it myself. 

“Wire Room” gave the British actor and Willis a chance to collaborate on a deeper level than they did with “Out of Death” last year. I was glad to have the opportunity to work with Bruce more extensively than I had previously,” says Trevena. You can now watch “Wire Room”  on-demand, on digital platforms, and in select theaters.
