Over the past century, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has become a staple in the horror genre. Film adaptations of the classic monster have been countless, and Focus Features’ upcoming reimagining of the story, Lisa Frankenstein, will breathe new life into it.
Now that we know Kathryn Newton is starring, we know Lisa Frankenstein has just started filming. Newton shared the news on her Instagram page, showing fans a glimpse of “Day 1” on set. Two images were posted by the actress.
On the set are a chair and an official film slate for the project. Both the slate and chair feature the film’s logo, which features Lisa Frankenstein in neon pink. It also reminds me of film logos from the classic Universal Monster era because of its blocky font.
Though it doesn’t give anything away about the story, this may give an indication of the overall tone of the movie. Diablo Cody is no stranger to the horror genre, having written the cult classic film Jennifer’s Body.
Aside from having satisfying horror themes, that film was also bursting with comedic wits, like Cody’s other modern classic coming-of-age story Juno. The story of Lisa Frankenstein might very well follow the same horror theme. The film will also mark Zelda Williams’ directorial debut.
We don’t know much about the plot of Lisa Frankenstein, but it takes place in 1989 when an “unpopular high schooler accidentally reanimates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and turns him into the man she dreams of by using a broken tanning bed in her garage”.
The film sounds like a modern take on the classic story, and anyone well versed in Frankenstein lore may know what the rest of the plot holds, but it will be interesting to see how it adds to the narrative.
I, Frankenstein or the original 1931 Universal film and its masterpiece of a sequel have both done this monstrous tale to death. Lisa Frankenstein, however, sounds like it will be a horror comedy based on Cody’s history and the synopsis.
If that’s the case, creating the ideal boyfriend with a broken tanning bed is bound to bring on a lot of humor and a unique take on the familiar tale. One of the last things this film has going for it is its two leads.
Along with Newton, who has starred in underrated horror gems like Paranormal Activity 4 and Freaky, Cole Sprouse also stars in this Frankenstein adaptation. His TV credits include The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Riverdale (which features some horror), and he has also appeared in Moonshot and Five Feet Apart.
I am extremely excited to see these two young stars work together, especially given the premise and genre of the film. Despite the lack of a release date for Lisa Frankenstein, considering that the film just began shooting, we should hear something very soon. Below you will find Newton’s latest behind-the-scenes post to build your undead anticipation.
