The Little Mermaid live-action director Rob Marshall discusses Halle Bailey’s performance of “Part of Your World.”The Little Mermaid director Rob Marshall reacts to Halle Bailey’s rendition of “Part of Your World.” A
after classic fairytales like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan, John Musker and Ron Clements’ 1989 Disney Renaissance-era torchbearer, The Little Mermaid, is now being made into a live-action film. Ariel is played by Bailey, of the Grammy-winning singing duo Chloe x Halle, in The Little Mermaid, directed by Mary Poppins Returns’ Marshall.
Melissa McCarthy will play the treacherous sea witch Ursula, with whom Ariel makes a deal to become human. There are rumors that the live-action film will take some liberties with the source material to empower Ariel and offer a more feminist perspective.
The Little Mermaid is filled with intriguing elements, including a possible rap song from Daveed Diggs’ Sebastian and highly anticipated voice performances from Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina. However, one of the most interesting aspects is the return of original composer Alan Menken, as well as four to five new songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
It also includes Ariel’s iconic anthem, “Part of Your World,” which fans know and love from the 1989 movie. Having witnessed Bailey’s performance of the song, Marshall shares his reaction with Variety. The director recalls being moved when he first heard Bailey sing “Part of Your World” during the audition.
In the studio, the actor was again astonished by her voice when he returned to record the song. According to Marshall, Bailey is the perfect choice for the role of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Fans were previously concerned about the new songs in the live-action version, but now the director has offered reassurance that the movie will honor the gorgeous, triumphant ballads from the animated film, with Bailey doing full justice to Howard Ashman and Menken’s memorable score.
Even though the producers found new moments to musicalize, the original scores will not be compromised in any way. The fact that Bailey’s voice moved Marshall to tears bodes well for the live-action adaptation, appeasing those who have doubts about its ability to do justice to the Disney classic.
The experience of performing “Part of Your World” was not only surreal and sentimental for Marshall, but also for Bailey, who had her dream realized by getting the chance to perform it. It is hoped that when The Little Mermaid arrives in theaters, the new version of “Part of Your Word” will connect with audiences as well.
