According to the first Joker 2 plot details, the upcoming DC movie will center around the titular villain’s time in Arkham Asylum. Joaquin Phoenix has already confirmed that he will reprise his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck in the movie, which will be a sequel to Todd Phillips’ gritty drama. In the movie, Arthur was hospitalized in Gotham City’s psychiatric hospital toward the end.
Before the credits roll, he appears to have shot and killed the doctor who was treating him, then run off and was chased by guards. Based on The Wrap’s report, it seems like he didn’t succeed in escaping since the movie is predominantly set inside the infamous establishment.
Considering the movie’s working title, Joker: Folie à Deux – which refers to the clinical term for ‘shared madness, hallucinations, and delusions’ – the setting shouldn’t come as a surprise. As reported, Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn, whom the Clown Prince of Crime first meets in Arkham.
A musical, Joker: Folie à Deux will tell the story of Arthur as he transforms from a failed stand-up comedian into a murderous menace. Those who have seen Birds of Prey may recall Margot Robbie’s Harley blocking out a beating from Ewan McGregor’s Roman Sionis by slipping into a vision of herself performing ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend, so perhaps Joker 2 will follow in that vein.
It will still be a while before we see what Warner Bros. and DC have in store for Joker: Folie à Deux, which is due to release on October 4, 2024. We’ve outlined all the movies coming our way in 2022 and beyond in the meantime.
