An official statement is released by Leslie Grace regarding the cancellation of the Batgirl film, in which she would have played Barbara Gordon. There was no doubt that Warner Bros.’ upcoming DC movie Batgirl would be one of the most anticipated. Batgirl is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who also directed Ms. Marvel.
The film follows Barbara’s journey to becoming Gotham City’s vigilante. Michael Keaton was set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, following his appearance in The Flash. HBO Max will air the film after principal photography concludes on March 31 in 2022.
Warner Bros. surprised Hollywood with an unexpected move. It was a controversial decision for Discovery to cancel the Batgirl movie. Neither HBO Max nor the studio plans to release Batgirl in theaters. Over the past 24 hours, fans and industry figures have weighed in on Warner Bros.’s surprise call. Discovery cancels the DCEU film.
After social media reacted to the cancellation of the Batgirl film and the directors responded, Grace herself has now spoken out. As she praised her co-stars and the creative team, Grace also expressed her gratitude to her fans.
“Working with absolute greats and forming lifelong friendships has blessed me.” she wrote. A few behind-the-scenes photos and videos of the actress on the Batgirl set can be found here. There were many reports regarding Warner Bros.’ state after the Batgirl movie was canceled.
It is expected that Discovery will shake things up even more in the future. The DC brand has received the most attention over the last few days despite the fact that many things are still unconfirmed. Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2 sequels have both been pushed back once again, and the Supergirl spinoff following The Flash has been canceled.
This week, Warner Brothers will report its quarterly earnings; more details about Batgirl’s cancellation may be revealed then. For many reasons, Batgirl’s first lead role in a feature film would have been extremely unfortunate. Grace’s portrayal of Batgirl would have also been a significant step for representation since it would have been the first time Barbara has been portrayed by a Latina.
In spite of Grace’s enthusiasm throughout the entire process, she is most disappointed that her version of the character will not be shared. Only time will tell whether Batgirl ever makes it to theaters, or if a miracle occurs, despite fans’ reactions to its cancellation.
