A She-Hulk writer explains why an abomination appeared in Shang-Chi

Jessica Gao, writer and showrunner of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, provides insight into the origins of Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. During Phase 4, Tatiana Maslany will star as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (a lawyer who defends super-humans as she becomes one).

Among such superhumans is Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) from The Incredible Hulk, who becomes the giant, antagonistic monster Abomination. Blonsky was charged by Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt) to capture Bruce Banner/Hulk (Edward Norton).

As a result of serums and gamma radiation, he transforms into the giant Abomination in order to fight the Hulk in New York City. Nevertheless, he is defeated by Banner and imprisoned by Ross. It wasn’t until 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings that he appeared in a cameo fight against Wong (Benedict Wong), the Sorcerer Supreme.

It surprised many that he returned, and audiences wondered why he was included at all. With Blonsky’s return to the MCU in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, fans are even more intrigued. As Gao explains in an interview with ComicBook.com, the Abomination reappeared after a long absence.

Blonsky was in Blonsky’s original pitch for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, prior to Shang-Chi’s release. The Abomination character was inserted into the film to align with the upcoming series when she was hired.

Gao reveals that Blonsky’s return in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is much more than just a brief cameo, as it is integral to the series’ narrative. Through the show’s nine episodes, Walters’ defense of Blonsky, perhaps to free him from prison after decades in prison, maybe the plot thread.

Therefore, Blonsky was included in Shang-Chi as a result of Gao’s decision to use him in such an important way, which Gao later attributed to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “All roads lead to Kevin.”

In She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Roth previously promised that audiences would learn much more about Blonsky, including what he has been doing since Shang-Chi. Gao’s remarks align with Roth’s previous comments. Despite the series’ relatively small debut, it is already affecting other media ahead of its debut. In addition to Daredevil appearing before She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is shaping up to be an MCU entry not to be missed.
